Locals take advantage of the friendly atmosphere in strolling amongst the town’s numerous and diverse restaurants, bars, bakeries and coffeehouses. San Franciscans have also helped to make Fairfax a popular weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts wanting to explore the wooded areas, rolling hills, lakes, streams and small inlets that comprise the Upper Ross Valley. Hikers, equestrians, fishermen and mountain bikers rave about the area’s challenging terrain while embracing its unbridled beauty. For visitors, Fairfax is viewed as the great escape while for locals Fairfax is simply a great place to live.

Fairfax is a member city of Marin County, one of the nine Bay Area counties. Although Marin is usually thought of as a suburban residential and recreational area, ranching and dairying are major features of the rural areas of West Marin. Industry in the county includes movie and video production, computer software, communications equipment, printing, and the manufacture of plastic products, ceramics, candles and cheese. Marin County is linked to San Francisco by the Golden Gate Bridge and to the East Bay by the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. It is bordered on the north and northeast by Sonoma County and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The 520 square miles of Marin offer a wide variety of topography, climate and vegetation. The terrain ranges from the tidal flats of the Pacific coastline to the slopes of Mount Tamalpais, and from the dense stands of redwood and pine to the inland grasslands and exposed rocky areas.

The combination of mountains, sea and climate in Marin County, with over 141,000 acres of federal, state and county parkland, open space and two water districts’ lands devoted solely to recreation, has made the country a recreation destination for the entire Bay Area. The many state, county and city operated parks and recreational facilities in the area include China Camp State Park, Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Point Reyes National Seashore, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Marin County children are educated in 19 school districts whose enrollments range from 12 students to 7,000 students. Fifteen of the school districts are elementary districts, two are unified districts and two are high school districts. Public schools in Fairfax include White Hill Middle School and Manor Elementary. Private schools in the town include Saint Rita Elementary and Cascade Canyon School with grades from K-8. Colleges and universities located within 20 miles of Fairfax included the College of Marin, Contra Costa College, University of California-San Francisco, University of San Francisco, Academy of Art College, Golden Gate University and San Francisco State University. Several other schools are also located throughout the Bay Area, most notably being the University of California-Berkley and Stanford University in nearby Palo Alto.

Like most cities and towns in this area, Fairfax boasts a rich history that dates back to the earliest European settlers. Noteworthy locations that still stand today include the Marin Town and Country Club, Saint Ritas Meeting Hall and the Fairfax Regional Branch Marin Country Free Library. The town was originally part of the Mexican Land Grant and derives its name from Lord Charles Snowden Fairfax, the tenth Baron of Cameron, Scotland, who was lured west by the gold rush.

Today, Fairfax has evolved into a progressive town with a strong leadership that is committed to growth, education, safety and beautification. The town is an ideal place to live as residents benefit from the peace and solitude of a small community without sacrificing the amenities of a major city due to its proximity to San Francisco. From natural wonders such as the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco Bay, and the redwood forest, to modern attractions such as professional baseball and football stadiums, worldly concert halls and state of the art performance venues, residents of Fairfax play in one of the most exciting backyards the country has to offer.
